Russian authorities have accused Ukrainian forces of launching air strikes on the Russian region of Bryansk, which borders Ukraine, the latest in a series of allegations of cross-border attacks by Kyiv on Russian territory. He added it would "affect people's standard of living and the competitiveness of the European economy". "Supplies from other countries that could be sent to Europe, primarily from the United States, would cost consumers many times more," Mr Putin said. Ukraine's armed forces said Russian attacks on the towns of Popasna and Rubizhne, both north of Mariupol, had been repulsed and a number of tanks and other armoured vehicles had been destroyed.
The ministry said its forces had also completely taken control of the Ilyich Steel Plant in the besieged port city of Mariupol.
Russia's defence ministry said on Friday it had struck a military target on the edge of Kyiv with cruise missiles, and promised more strikes against the city. There were no immediate reports of damage. The explosions appeared to be among the most significant in Ukraine's capital region since Russian troops pulled back from the area earlier this month. Powerful explosions have been heard in the capital Kyiv, Kherson in the south, the eastern city of Kharkiv and the town of Ivano-Frankivsk in the west. "But they didn't know how brave Ukrainians are, how much we value freedom and the possibility to live the way we want," Zelenskyy said. Mr Zelenskyy said he remembered the first day of the invasion when many world leaders, unsure whether Ukraine could survive, advised him to leave the country. It was his only apparent reference to the Moskva. Mr Zelenskyy gave an extensive and almost poetic listing of the many ways in which Ukrainians have helped to fend off the Russian troops, including "those who showed that Russian warships can sail away, even if it's to the bottom" of the sea. In his late-night video address, Mr Zelenskyy called it "an achievement of millions of Ukrainians, of everyone who on February 24 made the most important decision of their life – to fight."
